Around this time of year, I find myself turning inward, having less to say and more to think about. I find myself wanting to soften into this weird, timeless period in between Christmas and New Year’s, where the days blend together. I find myself letting myself dream more, and when that harsh little voice enters my mind, letting it be there without needing to judge it. I find myself not wanting to consume or create much, but allowing whatever is arising to the surface to pop up, and maintaining enough spaciousness for that to be possible.
And so, for this week’s letter, in the spirit of wanting to say less, I thought I could share with you the questions I’m sitting with in the coming days, and we could reflect together. As I just typed that, an image came to mind of each of us in our own little homes, rooms, corners, spread across the globe with a journal in hand, jotting down our thoughts as we explore our inner world. If it feels right, I’d love to hear your responses to any of the questions below in the comments!
New year prompts
What did you learn about yourself in 2023? In what ways did you get closer to yourself?
What’s something from 2023 (an accomplishment, a change, a habit) that your past self would be proud of yourself for?
What allowed for this thing to happen?
What do you want to leave behind? What emotions does that bring up for you?
What do you want to cultivate more of? What emotions does that bring up for you?
What skills/qualities do you hope to nurture this year? What are small, daily ways that you can do so?
Picture yourself 1 year from now, the end of December 2024. What does this version of you feel like? What does your life look like? Write in the present tense, as if it’s already happened. Don’t filter! Let yourself dream.
And to you, thank you thank you thank you. Thank you for presence, attention, curiosity and engagement with my writing this year. My weekly ritual of writing these letters has quickly become a favorite, and it consistently amazes me how we can all connect over such human feelings and experiences that can often make us feel so alone. I’m wishing you health, safety, joy, ease and freedom in the coming year.
Thank you so much for being here, exactly as you are.
With warmth,
Meg
